A servo controller (also known as a servo amplifier or servo drive) generates current in the motor phases of a servo motor, causing it to move. The motor is connected to a load whose motion needs to be precisely controlled.

This is achieved using a feedback system, such as an incremental or absolute encoder, installed on the load or directly on the servo motor. The feedback signal is continuously compared with the target signal, and the servo controller adjusts the motor movement accordingly to minimize the deviation.

How Do Servo Drives Work?

Servo drives are designed for applications that require rapid changes in speed and torque. They are also built to handle high overload capacity and deliver strong holding torque when stationary. A commonly known example is servo drives used in robotic arms. However, this represents only a small portion of the wide range of automation use cases for servo drive technology.

Every servo drive system generally consists of the following core components: a servo motor und servo amlifier that includes power electronics and control logic. Depending on the application, additional components may be added with specific functions. Servo motors can reach their rated maximum speed from a standstill in just a few milliseconds. Just as quickly as they accelerate, they can decelerate and reverse direction.
