What is a direct-drive rotary axis?
Direct-drive rotary axes, also referred to as rotary tables, rotary stages or positioning tables, can position applications and objects such as workpieces at a predefined angle. This is enabled by a servo drive. Depending on their use, rotary axes differ in their design, installation position, accuracy and bearing stiffness. Rotary tables are ready-to-install rotary axes consisting of a motor, either an integrated torque motor or an adapted rotary servo motor, a bearing and a position measuring system.
Rotary axes are used, among other applications, in machine tools for machining operations such as milling, drilling or grinding. During machining, additional forces act on the rotary axis. The requirements for accuracy and stiffness are therefore very high.
In automation, rotary tables transport components. The table indexes and positions the assembly at a defined angle for a processing step. The assembly is then transported by the rotary table to the next process step. A high cycle frequency, and therefore a short indexing time, is required.
