SHAREon (Sensors for High Altitude Research Experiment – Optical Navigation) is led by an international team from Ernst Abbe University Jena and Delft University of Technology. The project develops novel optical attitude sensors for small satellites, including an infrared Earth-radiation sensor and a pioneering three-dimensional sun sensor.

As part of the prestigious REXUS/BEXUS program supported by DLR, SNSA, and ESA, the experiment will launch in autumn 2025 aboard a stratospheric balloon, reaching 30 km altitude under near-space conditions. Results are expected to advance miniaturized satellites, especially TU Delft’s PocketQube program.

“Supporting such initiatives is an investment in the future,” says JAT CEO Simon Schwinger. “Students gain hands-on experience, while new ideas for tomorrow’s space technologies emerge.”

• Bee-Friendly Grounds: JAT beekeepers care for bee colonies and produce around 100 jars of in-house honey each year.

The solution in detail:

Instead of a jerky movement, the target position (45°) is dynamically adapted to the current rotor position. The speed is continuously regulated so that the rotor is brought into position in a controlled manner.
From firmware release 5.33, the new routine is available for the ECOVARIO^® 114D, 415D, 616 and 616D models and can be easily configured.
With the method, you benefit from a smooth and safe motor start - ideal for demanding and safety-critical applications.

Initially as a design engineer and since 2008 as Managing Director, Stephan Preuß has characterised the development of JAT with great commitment. Originally a spin-off from Carl Zeiss, he further developed the company into a hidden champion. Today, 200 employees combine 35 years of expertise and shape the company into a precision specialist in drive technology.

The JAT team has been searching for a suitable successor early and intensively and is pleased to welcome Simon Schwinger as the new Managing Director from May 2024 onwards. In addition to extensive experience from various management positions in SMEs and corporations, Simon Schwinger also brings commitment and enthusiasm to continue the JAT success story. With his roots in Jena, he knows the challenges and opportunities of the location inside out. At the same time, as an international networker, he promotes the global visibility of the company.

With this ambition and his enthusiasm for the tasks ahead, Simon Schwinger is looking forward to starting his new role at JAT.

Yesterday, the parties involved in the Thuringian sustainability agreement from the state government and the business community met at our premises to renew the agreement. Parallel to the extension of the agreement, JAT received the third NAT certificate from the patron of the agreement, Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow.

After a tour of the company, the visitors were able to relax and enjoy the event at our food truck. Grit Booth, Managing Director NAThüringen, and Stephan Preuß planted a skunk ash tree together in our biotope. This tree species contains a lot of nectar, which our buzzing subtenants will surely be very happy about.

The sustainability agreement has existed since 2004 and is a voluntary agreement between the Thuringian state government and the Thuringian economy. Many German states have taken the trend-setting alliance as a model and initiated similar ones.

Therefore the project aims to make accessible the already existing operating data of servo inverters (SU) installed in drive components and process them through Prony analysis in order to develop a condition monitoring system for mechatronic drives for mask production plants. Thus, it is possible to infer the operating states of the drives without the aid of external sensors, assign process and machine deviations to their causes, record process parameters at 100µs intervals and to adjust them if necessary, to ultimately increase machine efficiency.

The system can be used to move a fiber laser, for example, in a highly dynamic manner. The corresponding dynamics have the advantage that the material to be processed does not burn. The air bearings enable frictionless movement, corners and radii thus receive a clean and precise contour. In addition, it would be possible to work simultaneously, i.e. to attach another tool on the other side of the axis. Which saves costs and time for the end user.

Such a solution does not yet exist on the market and will be presented for the first time at the SPS in Nuremberg from 8-10.11.2022.

In linear direct drives, high amounts of heat are released by strong acceleration and braking processes with simultaneous high loads, resulting in the need for a cooling system. The aim of the project is to develop a heat-tube-cooled linear direct drive with an intelligent temperature control system. The cooling system should function without the periphery of water cooling systems, which have been necessary until now. This leads to a clear advantage in terms of handling and costs. The temperature control (targeted additional heat-input) is also intended to increase the accuracy and service life of the drive windings.

JAT receives the jury prize "East Thuringian company 2019". Due to Corona, the award ceremony was delayed until now. The prize was handed over by Jörg Riebartsch, editor-in-chief of the OTZ.

The jury awarded the future orientation of JAT - the sustainability orientation, the employee friendliness and the responsibility not only for entrepreneurial success but also for a future worth living.

The soon-to-be electric car owners do not have to worry about insurance, maintenance or winter tires. They receive an all-inclusive package that covers everything through a monthly rate. JAT has joint forces with Jena-based car dealership Fischer to provide this deal to the company’s employees.

With a theoretical range of up to 480 kilometers, green electricity can be charged at the company site via the company's own charging infrastructure. This year, additional solar panels will be installed on the JAT site so that self-generated electricity can be charged in the future.

CEO Stephan Preuß is very content about the project and emphasizes: "Sustainability is not an accessory, but a necessity for our future. It is a matter close to our hearts to enable our employees to involve themselves in the subject of climate protection".

Our environmental management system ensures JAT is aware of, monitors and meets all requirements under environmental law. For instance, compliance with a wide variety of laws under international, European, German and local law is required when disposing of waste, manufacturing products or utilising energy. With this certification, JAT affirms its commitment to continuously improving environmental protection.

A joint research project between JAT and Dresden’s Technical University sets out to change this. Started in June 2021, the project aims to integrate a momentum compensation process into the JAT servo amplifiers that was developed and patented by TU Dresden. It aims to increase dynamics while maintaining or also even increasing motion accuracies. In detail, the momentum created by the load’s mass is compensated through controlling additional drive units.

The ImPosAnt project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affair and Energy (Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Energie).

This highly dynamic motion system convinces with its excellent absolute positioning and repeating accuracy through its start-stop-cycles, thus significantly improving the customer’s inspection system performance. Furthermore, the drive system’s new design simplifies installation, maintenance and service procedures.

The servo arm as a vessel-filling device consists of a motor, an axis and a servo amplifier. Its application is to fill vessel of various shapes with e.g. chemicals, lacquers or cremes. The filling level is measured by an ultrasonic sensor or through weight equivalence. The filling lance’s current height is determined based on the corresponding encoder value, allowing for the distance between the two to be freely set. This method also covers filling irregular shaped vessels.

As the function is integrated into the JAT servo amplifiers, there is no need for pneumatic components.
