Notched Belt Systems

Exact positioning of large inertias - without gear!

Load: 5 kg
Task: 500 positionings per minute, max. 20 µm overshoot
Resolution: 1 µm
Equipment: notched belt (with first resonance at 20 Hz), external linear encoder, CANbus or Profibus as interface for ECOSTEP®

Motor type 23S31 with heavy duty shaft and assembly flange. As controller we use the ECOSTEP®100 with a 1 µm optical linear encoder. The drive system has an average loss of about 10 W and is supplied with 2A x 60VDC. That's the way how fast positionings could be economical and ecological.

Compared to a spindle drive (10 mm lead) the belt driven system with a pitch of 125 mm per revolution is a little bit slower at positionings below 15 mm. But if you have also longer positionings the belt system drive is faster. The resonance problem due to the decoupling of a two mass system at high inertia ratios is a big challenge for the controller because they occur mainly at a time scale of 50 ms. To yield a good performance the controller offers a feed forward control with adjustable low pass filters.
